Success or “This Content is Currently Unavailable”

Success!

Just an update about the whole plagiarism scandal — this afternoon I received notification from Facebook that the ungentleman in question’s Facebook profile and page have been removed due to copyright violation and violation of their Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. It only took about 24 hours for Facebook to take action. As much as we all complain about Facebook for other reasons – I’m impressed. I wasn’t expecting much being that the content was witchcraft-themed.

I want to thank everyone for their support, comments, blog posts, tweets, and help in raising awareness of the situation. I am very much feeling the love and it helped me get through this troublesome crisis with my sanity intact. So – thanks to you all with deepest gratitude from the bottom of this witch’s heart.

    A nice victory :)

Though I’d rather see a note stating that it was though to copyright infringement, so that his facebook “friends” would know too…

Happy to hear it. Still having a lil bit of blow-back battle from some admins of a group that were involved in the matter, but it’s raised a great deal of awareness, so mission accomplished.

    • 4 Nikkie March 5, 2012 at 2:19 pm

I have left that Group as quick as I entered it. My posts regarding this matter was deleted when I didn’t agree with them when they tried to justify or water down the gravity of the situation.

Yup! He’s very gone indeed! Good job Facebook! Glad your sanity is intact (or is it?) LOL *beams along with polly*

Sarah – That’s great FB was able to keep yr artwork copyrighted for sure and also great his profile was deleted, though he may pop his little head up again at a new listing. Another thing you can do is watermark yr images as copyrighted then people will not suck them off the www. I like to google myself and my coven every few months just to see who is dropping my name or claiming this and that. lol. Btw i wanted to put a link to yr blog onto my blog and what i usually do is pull the main icon off the website, which in yr case would be yr tree/wingedskull/snakes and use that to embed the link in and also type in that it is a copyrighted image, so can i do that with yr permission? Thanks. Shawnus

I’m so glad Sarah. I have seen my words displayed on other blog sites as well….word for word….Glad to know there is some recourse. Good for Facebook and good for those who don’t allow it to happen!

    Blessings, Autumn

Congratulations! Its always troublesome when someone blatantly steals your work. I am a writer and while I tend to have some liberal views regarding the sharing of information, I do expect to at least be referenced when a person quotes my work. I am happy that you recieved such a quick response from Facebook. I enjoy your blog.

Sarah, my deepest sympathies to you…. I have been the victim of plagiarism myself, and it’s no fun! I tried to correct the error and contact those responsible to take the appropriate action to no avail. I was writing an investigative article on the subject of the Eurasian hearth-cult motif, which I had posted to my Myspace page way back when, and someone apparently saw it and cross-posted it without properly attributing it to me, the author. I spent years researching this subject, too.

  21. 25 Wade MacMorrighan March 5, 2012 at 12:16 pm

…moreover, and I had recently forgotten all about this: I have even been punished for asserting my own Copyright! Many years ago I had shared a Potion of mine on-line, when a well-known British store owner seems to have seen it; anyway, long-story-short, she made it and sold it o someone else, asserting that it was HER formula! I was able to contact her and, not believing my source, I asked if she could clarify on the issue. Instead of handling this manner like an adult, she decided to publicly defame my character and my formulas (even though this particular potion she praised when I had posted it!), sided with the individual who told me about what she had done (that left me feeling as though I’d stumbled into Bizarro World), and even contacted Hotmail who seems to have reacted first and shut down my e-mail account at the time without investigating the issue properly. I hear that she threatened Hotmail with legal action if they did not comply with her demands.

Very happy to hear the good news.

  23. 27 Quercus Robur March 5, 2012 at 1:47 pm

Glad you got it sorted, but if were you I’d google him to make sure he doesn’t pop up elsewhere with your work

  24. 28 Laurel March 5, 2012 at 4:31 pm

Good stuff. Hopefully he will learn from his actions, or if not, he is shunned in every nook and cranny on the web.

  25. 29 witchoutsidethepinebarrens March 5, 2012 at 4:38 pm

Sarah-I’m glad that facebook stayed on top of it and quickly resolved the issue .

  26. 30 Polly (Pagan by Design) March 5, 2012 at 6:15 pm

    Good news Sarah! Hurray!

Wade, your story is very sad (and a bit scary). I hope the outcome was righteous.

  27. 32 Wade MacMorrighan March 6, 2012 at 3:26 am

Polly, while I cannot be 100% sure, her business does not seem to be thriving in the least, these days; I don’t even see her on-line anymore, where she used to lurk until she’s post her spells and formulas with SPAMy footers that would link back to her site. Mine has not been the first formula I have been told she has pilfered over the years, too, using a nom-de-plum! What stung so bad about her actions was that I lost some very close contacts with that e-mail address when it was lost….some very close contacts and friends from college who I haven’t heard from since and had no other method for contacting them in return.

  28. 33 Harold Roth March 6, 2012 at 8:57 pm

I’m glad FB acted quickly, but I doubt you will encounter any hestancy to act on copyright violation because the material is witchcraft related. I haven’t had any problems with webhosts or places like ebay. The ones who have given me problems were people who said they were witches and who were running a site and refused to take the material down because they thought I should “share” it. I have run into some real nasty people that way. One has repeatedly stolen my material (and that of a number of other people) over the years. Losers, every one of them. People who have never created anything. Feh on them.

  29. 34 Cole March 7, 2012 at 11:58 am

Glad to hear it. He really was disgraceful.

  30. 35 Sarah Lawless March 9, 2012 at 10:47 am

Thank you everyone for your support and comments. I am aware that his facebook profile is back up – sans my original content. No, he did not apologize or own up to his blatant plagiarism, but only sent a short note blaming it all on an unreliable source (i.e. he didn’t think he’d get caught). I’m not going to stress about it as, at the end of the day, it was just facebook and just an asinine jerk (of which there are plenty in this world).

Time to get back to some witchy awesomeness ;)
