Rowan Ogham Card

Rowan Ogham Card
Watercolour and archival ink
26 x 36 cm

One down, twenty-four more to go! I estimate the entire deck could take 40-50 days total to complete. Each illustration takes almost two days to complete. To quote the lovely Judith (who I am designing this deck for), here is the meaning of the Rowan card:

“In a reading, the message of this card is positive and not negative. It does not tell us that there are things threatening us from outside because we all know already that the world can be a dangerous place. Instead it reminds us that we are already protected and to employ our protections without fear. The card reversed tells us much the same thing, that we should use common sense to overcome what threatens us.” (Click here for the full meaning)

Quite beautiful! I love the color and the whole set-up of the card. You are truly very talented! Lucky Lady who is to be the owner of the deck! :D

Beautiful work! The lesson it gives really made me think and pause. It’s nice learning new things. The house is really cool. It reminded me a little of Baba Yaga’s house. An awesome witchy home.

I was wondering. Does the Serpent represent natural chaos/change? Does the large serpent shown in pic, and in the Norse tree of life, have they the same meaning as regular snake symbolism?

There are legends that say a serpent or dragon lives beneath the roots of Rowan trees. In this case, the serpent is protective just like the magic of Rowan itself. Snake symbolism varies culture to culture. In Northern Europe they were once considered a lunar creature of rebirth and renewal sacred in Goddess cults.

Are you planning to publish this set of cards commercially ? If so judging from this example it might be a winner.

We are planning on publishing it and Judith has written a companion book for the deck. I’m still in the process of convincing my publisher to take it on.

      Cheers and thanks

hot damn.. your publisher so should be taking these with their companion book.. cause that would be very cool.

as an aside, there is quite a lot of very valuable pagan writings, information and magic coming out of Canada currently. i find this very interesting, and i am wondering how influential it will be, because for so long Canadian pagans have been very quiet, compared to their American cousins, but in that quite way of Canadians you lot are becoming respected in action.. hmm.. its difficult to explain.. but i have a feeling.. *waves hands around*..

        ok enough pondering for today..
