I went for a very long walk on Saturday circling from one end of Forest Grove to the other collecting the leaves of oak, ash, and thorn for incense and potions. When I was walking upon a dirt trail in the woods, a massive bug flew in front of me – it was the length and thickness of my index finger, segmented into three parts, a large end, a medium middle and a smaller round head – it reminded me of sausage links especially since it was flesh-coloured – sausage links with spindly legs… The bug had four wings, big like a dragonfly’s but shorter, broader and no irredescence – they were see through. I swear, swear the bug stopped in front of me, looked right at me, and then went on flying. Now, I was born and raised here and have never seen a bug like this, tried looking it up and found nothing even close to similar. I believe I saw myself a wood spirit – there are supposed to be quite a few in the forests here according to local lore, but I’ve never seen one – it was quite unnerving but exhilarating at the same time. Hubby and some other local witches have also seen strange little spirits – small dark creatures standing on their hind legs… like little men. It reminded me of the insect from Pan’s Labyrinth, except I wasn’t led to Pan, but perhaps another time!

My first thought was Forest Spirit. Niiiice. Checking you out.
I saw this creature again on Sunday while at the beach, it flew right up to me, stared at me again, then flew off but so impossibly fast it disappeared in the blink of an eye – only I saw it, my friends did not. In my nerd’s brain, my first thought was that it was so fast it was like the Enterprise going into warp speed… quite unnatural.
I finally figured it out, my stalker insect is definitely a golden cicada… and although we do have cicadas here in BC, they are black and dark green… not gold
