Sneak Peek into the Future

Today I finished the labels for my powders and blessed each little bottle. They’ll be going up in the shop tomorrow but I thought I’d share a picture of them before hand for the curious. Each label has a little skull reflecting the nature of the powder – these are all “right hand” powders, I’ll be making some for the other side of magic, but those will be in a catalogue separate from my Etsy shop. The catalogue will be for professionals and the more advanced practitioners and will be available on the Botanica’s website in another week or two.

Hoodoo Powders

Tomorrow I’ll be finishing the labels for my oils and making a few more magical concoctions. The plants I wildcrafted two weeks ago have dried, so I will have a selection of them available for purchase soon as well. Now that’s it’s summer I’ll be making a natural bug spray and a sun burn treatment to add to my herbal remedies section. I always need plenty of both for myself in the summer!

Rowan, Oils & Dusts

Rowan

Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day and the Rowan trees I’ve been keeping my eyes on were in full bloom so I headed out with my trusty little antler knife. I collected a bag of the flowers – which smell like public washroom deodorizer… seriously they do, it’s not pleasant (hawthorn smells much better). I also collected some twigs and leaves to dry and powder for incense and oils as Rowan is one of my favourite magical ingredients.

Magical Potions

I was a busy bee yesterday! I made five types of magical oils which are currently on the windowsill soaking up some sun – I plan to make even more today. And after smashing up an old red brick I also made seven different kinds of hoodoo powders. I’m drawing the labels today with a mix of hand drawing then scanning the labels into my computer and adding colour and text. I had so much fun making the powders – but I will not reveal what they are until the labels are done.

Bottles!

Bubble Bottles - so cute!

My order from Sunburst Bottle Co. came in the mail yesterday, yay! I’m so excited, I never knew I’d get this excited over empty bottles, but they’re so adorable and all the crafting possibilities have my mind spinning! I have been writing and researching recipes for magical oils, powders, perfumes as well as more herbal remedies. Sunburst has the most amazing selection. I got glass vials for powders, little 1/2 oz bubble bottles for potions, blue cobalt bottles with eyedroppers for oils, tiny perfume bottles for love oils and perfumes as well as a whole bunch of jars for salves. There’s even more than what was pictured, but they’re duplicates.  I’m starting to feel ready to take on vending at festivals this summer! The owners of HerbalCraft asked if I’d like to sell their herbs as well in my stall, I of course said yes! My vendor’s booth will be much like a little magic shop this year – plenty of magical supplies for practitioners.  I will also be assembling magical kits, but not like the scary ones in some shops – just a collection of supplies to get someone started for general or specific spellwork – oils, powders, incenses and sachets… oh my!

Animal Totem Skulls

I’ve finished the third and final skull – the fox skull fetish. For this skull I carved the top of the skull using my dremel and followed the patterns that were already present in the bone – the star is my own creation. Mr. fox has been painted black and has Northern European symbols and runes painted in red – the farmer’s fyfolt, the world tree, a crescent moon, and the rune mann. He has leather ears and a frayed red linen ruff. The fox has long been a totem across cultures for his quickness and cunning. The fox skull is also tiny like the rabbit skulls, around 5-6 inches long. All of the skull fetishes are now up for sale in the Forest Grove Botanica.

Hare Fetish Skulls

Hand painted hare skulls

I’ve been busy in my workshop the last few days working on the skulls I received in the mail. Today I finished turning the two hare skulls into fetishes. I painted them with ultramarine blue in prehistoric geometric patterns of the Goddess and of water (chevron’s, crescent moons) and one of them is painted with spirals which represent both binding and the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Each hare’s proud ruff is made from cedar bark I harvested from a huge cedar driftwood log that washed up from the sea. Both hare fetishes have white chicken feathers for their ears, and one also has blue jay feathers. I think they are just lovely, I really love the ruffs! My good friend who has a rabbit says a rabbit’s ruff is very important, it makes for a prouder more handsome and dominant rabbit.
